Learn more about regenerative, renewable...better than sustainable building materials, methods and styles
Different Alternative Building Materials
Alternative building materials include Earth, Foliage, Crete, Fabric, and Metal. Some of the building materials are then combined with one, two, or more of the basic materials. Building methods vary from using the material straight from mixing and forming it by hand, to a containment form system to contain the building material, to blocks or panels. In conclusion, it is important to consider the materials to use for a build, in addition to considering the building style as some materials work better with some styles then others.
Possible Building Styles
There are many building styles. Choosing the building style will depend on the building material/s chosen. Some materials work best with the way traditional structures are built, like square or rectangular shapes. However, with some of the materials it is possible and often preferred to build round, domes or vaults. If round is a chosen format, it can be finished with a traditional roof, receptacle roof or use the building material all the way to the top thereby creating a dome. Furthermore, some of the building materials can also be used to build a geodesic dome.

General Questions
Q: What does it means to build green, regenerable and renewable?
A: It means that you have chosen to build with materials that have as little as possible impact on the environment.
Q: Why …better than sustainable?
A: Sustainable means to keep things status quo. When building green housing I suggest thinking about what can be made better than status quo.
Q: What is the best building material?
A: It really depends on what feature/s you are looking for in a house. Go to the Deep Dive section and click on the building materials that attract you attention. Maybe even check out all the options. Looks at the Pros and Cons of each material.
Q: Is it difficult to get permit on these alternative building materials?
A: It is always a little challenging when you are doing something that is not seen or done every day. It is however getting easier and easier as more and more people are looking to do this kind of building format. Some codes are already established like for the Superadobe and the Compressed Adobe Brick (CEB’s or SEB’s).
Q: What is the cost of building this way?
A: Like with every built it depends on the square footage and the upgrades wanted. The great thing with many of these materials and building style is that you and your family can participate in the building process.
Q: Is there a place where I can see these houses in person and even stay in one to gain the experience?
A: Unfortunately, not at this moment. We are working on building Airbnb’s with each building method and material so you can experience each before making the decision of what is the best option for you. Check back often to stay informed.
Materials/Styles Questions
Q: Is Hemp houses safe?
A: Hemp has been used in France to build houses for a very long time. They are very safe and contrary to what many believe you can’t get high from living in a hemp house.
Q: What is the R-value of Superadobe?
A: Any time you build with adobe we are working with thermal mass rather than R-value. The thicker the wall the longer time it is going to take from the temperature to travel through the mass. Thermal mass buidings are best in a dry hot climate.
Q: What is Aircrete?
A: Aircrete is a mixture of soap foam and Portland cement. The foam creates bubbles in the Portland cement giving the material an insulating benefit.
Q: Is adobe strong enough to build with?
A: Abode have been used for thousands of years, both in the Middle East and by Romans. Many of these buildings still stand today after thousands of years. Per code, we are required to amend the adobe mix with a binding agent such as Portland cement or Lime.
